A Study on the People¢¥s Knowledge and Attitudes regarding Health Care Service in a Rural Town in Korea

Abstract
Presently, the government has a great interest in the improvement of health services for the population. In general, effective health services cannot be developed without understanding of people¢¥s attitudes toward their health, medical personnel and medical facilities.
The survey was conducted in August, 1976 by the trained interviewers. The housewives were asked the followings: first, how they think about the present health care service, second, where and when to visit for care of illnesses, third, the general idea of and the participation by the health care insurance cooperative and the last, the use of the health care service. The purpose of the survey is to provide data on what to do with the strategy of health educational approaches. The health insurance system has been set up for over one year in this area.
The major findings and inplications of the study are as follows:
1. A great number of people depend on the pharmacy for care of a common cold or diarrhea. This is true even among the insurance members, 54.3% go to the pharmacy to care of common cold and 80.6% for diarrhea.
2. The herb doctor is still popular among the people in rural area (38.2%). They also prefer the simple atmosphere of the herb doctor (41.5%) which shows that they do not care much about the modern facilities.
3. 76% of the insurance member would use the facilities more often if the clinic is located closer, and 68% of non-insurance member would do the same.
4. The feeling of friendliness of service sites might be associated with frequency of visits to certain places. Many people think those who work in the pharmacy are most friendly. Most of the respondents (74.4%) perceive the nurses to be friendly. However, more people among the insurance members do so than those of non-members.
5. Because of the superstition that rich people get sick more often than the poor, there is a tendency of less participation in insurance. Generally, 59.5% think there is a positive relationship between one¢¥s wealth and the frequency of incidence.
6. About the medical cost, 54.7% of the people think the pharmacy charges adequately but 62% think modern clinic and herb doctor are too expensive. Most people think the Health insurance clinic is inexpensive, however, 11% takes it to be still too expensive. Among the non-members 83.5% think the medical cost at the insurance clinic is inexpensive even though they do not become a member.
7. Both the members and non-members consider thant the rich families more tend to visit the modern clinic when they get sick but the poor are more apt to visit the pharmacy or rely upon the self-treatment at home.
The government plans to provide more health personnel and more facilities in the remote areas. However, it is questionable whether the people would take as much advantage of the health personnel and facilities as expected when they are provided. Through the review of survey findings, the suthor comes to make a conclusive remark that the provision of physicians and medical facilities itself will not result in good use and better health status. We have to direct more efforts to the reinforcement and development of health education programs that accelerate people¢¥s participation in the health care delivery program.
